World Bank project for India could revolutionise the production of fruits
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said the Rs 1,185-crore Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Development Project approved by the World Bank would revolutionise the production of fruits in the state by imparting latest techniques and plant material to the growers.The Chief Minister was speaking at a function organised by Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) at Dhalli in Shimla last evening. He said it was on the request of the state government that the World Bank had agreed to the proposal which would be launched shortly.“As agriculture, horticulture and floriculture are mainstay of rural populace of Himachal, the project would go a long way in strengthening the economic position of the orchardists and agriculturalists as it also includes the training component and exposure visits to know about latest techniques,” he said.The Chief Minister said traders play a very important role in marketing of fruits and vegetables and in the sale and purchase of the produce of the farmers. “There has been a paradigm shift in cultivation pattern as people were earning good amount by growing off-season vegetables which has given the required fillip to the rural economy,” the Chief Minister said.He said many marketing yards were under construction in the state and the government was committed to modernize the existing marketing yards and plan the upcoming ones according to the needs of the farmers. “There has been a lot of progress with regard to scientific techniques and our farmers need to adopt the latest technology to increase the quality and quantity of their produce,” he stressed.
