It was with great sorrow that we learned that Wolfgang Schmidt died August 24 in his home in Spain after a long sickness at the age of 75. He was a fruit trader dyed in the grain, worked in Valence, France as an intern, then as a buyer for one of the big German supermarket chains specialised in citrus fruit. In 1978 Wolfgang Schmidt and his family moved to the south of Spain and he became correspondent as well as marketing consultant for some major fruit trade magazines like Fruchthandel and Fruit World international. His special features covered the produce industry in Spain. He always dealt with the supply and demand situation, but never forgot to mention the impact for the growers. That task was an easy one for him, as he lived in the middle of citrus and olive plantations.
In the last years the editorial and sales work was taken over by his wife Christine and daughter Daphne, who maintained a very close contact with both the customers in Spain as well as the publishers around in Europe. The ‚Schmidt’ family as well as their business friends will miss this man, who was known as the ‚living Vademecum of the fruit trade’
